ABOUT US

Born in the twilight of Alaska’s rough and tumble frontier era, Betsy Lawer fondly recalls an era when gold nuggets were still the “coin of the realm.” By dint of a little savvy, a lot of hard work and measure of good luck, gold coins filled the pockets of many enterprising Alaskans.

Fascinated by hardy, free-wheeling pioneers like Hoochinoo Bill, Jersey Joe and Sweetwater Charley, Betsy saw many a fortune won and lost on the turn of a card, the nose of a sled dog or the flip of a coin.

Those early pioneers partied as hard as they worked, and always celebrated their good fortune with “the house.” By the end of the evening, over a bottle of fine wine and frontier cuisine, strangers from far-flung lands had become the best of friends.

As Alaska went on to embrace new frontiers, like the glittering silver bounty of epic salmon runs and the “black gold” of the pipeline era, Betsy met David Lawer - a big bear of a man - a tenderfoot from New York City. They decided to seek their fortunes together and they’ve been partners in life ever since.

Today, David and Betsy have staked their claim in California Wine Country in a quest for the pure gold of “bottled sunshine.” With savvy, hard work and a little luck, they strive to make that exceptional bottle of wine. The process is every bit as infectious as gold fever in Alaska.

Good fortune smiled on their hard work when they discovered talented and experienced winemaking “sourdough” partners - John Pina, Vineyard Manager and Larry Levin, Winemaker. David’s and Betsy’s wine is prized by astute winemakers who produce wines now earning coveted 90 Ratings from Wine Spectator, and Lawer Family Wines earn not gold nuggets, but prized gold medals for the family.
